It all starts with beer. The story continues round a table at PUBerta, then over a coffee from Damir. Berta and her journey tie all three together.

War came crashing into her world. Berta could only watch, unable to make sense of it. She knew one thing: she had to leave Karlovac.

When you’re running for your life, grand speeches are no use. You need help. The bottle held out to her became a lifeline — and the first step towards a new life.

His name was Damir. He hid Berta in his lorry and smuggled her from Karlovac to Hamburg. Without him, her story would have ended before it ever had a chance to begin.

In Hamburg she found a harbour, Helmuth and beer. After heartbreak, she returned home to Karlovac — with an anchor under her skin and a decision of her own.

Back in Karlovac, Berta began brewing her own beer. Her first batch was also her last. Then, without a word, she disappeared.

The first journey saved Berta.
The second saved her story.
Berta’s mark
Berta wears the anchor and rose on the arm that raises her beer. It recalls Hamburg, leaving and coming home. Across Svet Berty, it returns as her own personal mark.

Damir’s second journey had a destination. Here, Berta’s story found an address of its own — somewhere to taste, hear and experience her, over draught beer, good food, music and a table shared with strangers.

Damir · coffee smuggler
When Damir brought Berta safely to Považská Bystrica, his journey was not over. He started smuggling coffee. It has a purple-and-orange mood of its own, but it still belongs to the same story.

From Karlovac via Hamburg to Považská Bystrica, Damir carries coffee with the character of European cities. Karlovac, Zadar and Hamburg — three coffees for three moments in the day.

Half and half. A balanced blend of arabica and robusta named after the city where Berta’s story began.

More arabica, a gentler character. Coffee named after the seaside city on their shared route.

Pure arabica named after the harbour that stayed in Berta’s story for good.

Editorial rendering: Suttner knew people thought her ridiculous, even mad, and could only hope to God that they were right.
Bertha von Suttner searched for her place as a singer, teacher and secretary to Alfred Nobel. She found it in the cause of peace. Defying her family, she left for Georgia with her beloved Arthur; after returning to Austria, she became one of the peace movement’s most powerful voices.
Her novel Lay Down Your Arms! was known around the world. In 1905, she became the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Brilliant, brave and a little stubborn — just as Berthas tend to be.
To peace. To good health. To Berta!
No permission. No petrol station. More than 100 kilometres ahead.
In August 1888, Bertha Benz set off from Mannheim for Pforzheim with her sons Eugen and Richard. She did not tell her husband Carl. More than twelve hours later, after travelling mostly on unmade roads, she completed the first long-distance motor-car journey in history.
She found fuel at a pharmacy and solved problems as they arose along the road. In doing so, she proved that Benz’s patented motor car was not merely a workshop invention, but transport for the real world. Benz later joined forces with Daimler — and the Mercedes-Benz brand grew from that story.
To courage. To the road. To Berta!Gigs, T-shirts and evenings when Berta sounds every bit as good as she tastes.
